“I am thrilled to announce that I have been shortlisted for this year’s Portrait of Britain Vol. 7 award by the British Journal of Photography. I’m incredibly happy that two images from my project “Portraits of Identity”. A big thank you to Si Chen and Huda Abdulgader for participating in this special portraiture project, where I aim to capture how, as immigrants, our sense of identity can be blurred and redefined as we adapt to a new culture. I am also very thankful to this year’s judges and the team at Edinburgh College of Photography” - Elena Mendoza

“Really excited to announce that I’ve been shortlisted for the @bjp1854 Portrait of Britain Award Vol 7 with my Gangster Granny image of Margaret. I had a lot of fun shooting this one and actually using my very own amazing granny. Can’t wait to tell her she’s famous” - Jack Currie

Huda Abdulgader. Born in Libya and residing in Edinburgh for a long time, she loves the city and feels that part of her identity is connected to it. ‘Portraits of Identity’ is a photographic portrait project focused on cultural and individual identity. The aim is to capture a small part of Edinburgh’s cultural diversity, a city that embraces multiculturalism without losing its authenticity. To conceptualise these portraits, I have been inspired by the realisation, as an immigrant, that our sense of identity can be lost as we adapt to a new culture.

Si Chen, originally from China and currently residing in Scotland to pursue her dream of studying music at university and embracing a new culture.

Margaret. Quite possibly the most gangster granny to ever live.
