The Arusha Gallery, Dundas Street, Edinburgh will be exhibiting work by Juno Calypso and Carolina Mizrahi.
"Juno Calypso created the fictional character 'Joyce' in 2011 whilst studying for her BA in Photography at London College of Communication. 'Joyce' bacame the name of her series of self portraits which she staged in rented bedrooms or hotels, posing as this alter ego, she was able to reenact the private underlife of a woman consumed by the absurd construct of femininity, and carried out to the point of ritualised absurdity. 'Second Self' includes eight works from her latest series 'The Honeymoon Suite' - a continuation of the 'Joyce' series which she created in 2015.Calypso has been shortlisted for several photography awards since graduating recently including the D&AD Next Photographer Award and the Sky Academy Arts Scholarship".
"Last year saw her work winning the BJP International Photography Award as well as the Caitlin Art Prize. Juno has exhibited her photography extensively in London and New York as well as exhibiting in Switzerland, Mexico, Miami and South Korea.Brazilian born and London based Carolina Mizrahi is a graduate of London College of Fashion. Her 'Avatars' series used her signature intense colour blocking of pinks to highlight and challenge the representation of women in the media and advertising."I was particualrly interested in creating a really imposing colour scheme which would induce viewers to question the artwork. We don't really realise how many things are socially imposed on us on an hourly basis".
"Why pink is a colour associated with the female gender?!"Since graduating, Mizrahi has exhibited in group shows in London and Stockholm as well as having a solo exhibition at Bay Gallery Home. Her work has been featured in several publications and articles including Aesthetica Magazine, Fahrenheit, Another Magazine, Vogue Italy, Vogue Portugal and Vogue Brazil. Her work has also been collected by the University of the Arts London for their personal collection and archive".
